WHAT IS AYURVEDA?
Five thousand years ago, the sages of ancient India (the Rishis) created Ayurveda,
"the science of life". This ancient natural health care system, also known as
the mother of healing, teaches how to achieve optimal physical, mental, and emotional
health by living in harmony with nature and ourselves.

HOW DOES AYURVEDA WORK?
Ayurveda is a preventative medicine which views each patient as a unique, complex
individual. Unlike modern western medicine, which focuses on treating the symptoms of an
illness, Ayurveda concentrates on the source of the patient's "dis-ease" using
natural treatments to promote that persons inherent self healing abilities.
The basis of Ayurvedic philosophy is the belief that there is an intelligence in each of
us, like a river of knowledge, stemming from the ocean of Universal Consciousness. This
intelligence orchestrates the body's many functions which operate in conjunction with the
five basic elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. In the body, these elements
combine into three characteristic humors (doshas):
Vat: ether and air
Pit: fire and water
Kaph: water and earth |
Ayurvedic medicine helps us understand these doshas, thereby stimulating our inner
intelligence and activating our own unlimited healing potential. Each of us is born with a
unique combination of Vat, Pit, and Kaph. This combination is known in Ayurveda as our
psychosomatic constitution (prakriti).

AYURVEDA AND YOUR PRAKRITI
Ayurvedic medicine recognizes that we are each distinct and different beings, and
therefore will have varying experiences of illness and individual healing capacities. In
physical attributes and characteristics we are unique as well: some of us are quick, while
others are slow; some are more prone to certain health problems than are others. By
becoming aware of our individual elemental prakriti, we can learn to balance our own
physiology.
An Ayurvedic physician uses pulse diagnoses along with lab tests to determine an
individual's particular constitution and imbalances (pathologies). The physician then
recommends certain herbs, foods, vitamins, exercises, and routines that will help bring
the individual's doshas into balance and promote optimal health.

AYURVEDA AND NATUROPATHY:
COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINES
Like Ayurveda, Naturopathic medicine promotes the body's own unlimited healing ability. To
do this, it utilizes herbs, vitamins, minerals, and exercise. Natural cleansing procedures
are also used to clear the body of accumulated toxins. Combining Ayurvedic treatment with
Naturopathic medicine, as well as other healing systems such as acupuncture and soft
tissue manipulation has shown effective and successful results. Ayurveda is the
Naturopathic medicine of India.
