Our thyroid gland is the butterfly-shaped endocrine gland found in the lower front of the neck, below the Adam’s apple, close to the windpipe. It plays a role in creating hormones that regulate bodily functions such as metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. The thyroid hormones help in the utilization of energy in the body as well as in the proper functioning of the brain, heart, muscles, and other bodily organs. Our thyroid is under attack all the time because of our lifestyle, toxins in our environment, hormones in our foods, low level radiation, iodine deficiency, and more. Almost 30% of the patients in my clinic have some kind of a thyroid issue.

Physical activity and exercise is one of the main foundations of health and well-being. Exercise is an essential way which can stimulate our vitality, strength, and natural healing mechanisms of body. Our culture seems to have love-hate relationship with exercise and sports. The incidence of autism in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. According to the Center for Disease Control, one in every 88 children is considered to be on the autism spectrum. Perhaps more alarming than the fact that one in nearly every 90 children being on the scale, is the fact that diagnosis of autism has increased 50 fold in the last 40 years. Equally concerning is the fact that boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) than girls.

In the year 1665, Scientist Robert Hooke was the first person to use the microscope to look at organic tissue. He observed that the tissue was a grouping of small structures; each looked like they were walled off from their surrounding – sort of like the cells of a honeycomb. Hooke called these structures “cells”, a term that is still used to describe the single unit of living tissue. Nearly 350 years later, as our instruments have evolved into transmission electron microscope, our knowledge about the basis of life continues to grow. The discovery of DNA structure is one of the greatest accomplishments of the microscopic studies of the cells. This has developed the science of genomics; which is the study of genes and their effects on our body.

The body is an exquisite machine that calibrates all measures of health towards balance. One such measure of health is Blood sugar. The body is engaged in a constant game of see-saw between the hormone insulin and glucagon to help maintain blood sugar within normal limits. If the blood sugar becomes too low, it can cause loss of function of many organs, including the brain; if the blood sugar is too high, it can be poisonous to many organs, because it forms excess of glucose and ketones. For this reason, the dance of insulin and glucagon in the body is a requirement for survival. Pancreas is the central organ for helping to maintain blood sugar, because it is the source of the hormones insulin and glucagon. Insulin functions in the body to drive sugar into the cells, thus providing them energy and lowering concentration of blood sugar. Glucagon is released when the blood sugar is too low; it stimulates release of stored sugar from liver and muscles, as well as fat from adipose tissues. The opposing actions of these hormones maintain healthy blood sugar within a fairly narrow range. Injury to the pancreas or dysfunction of the insulin receptors can cause severe breakdown of the blood sugar management system of the body.

A doctor’s bedside manner is key to the delivery of high-quality patient care. Patients are often fearful and anxious. It is the doctor’s job to calm their fears and offer hope. A physician’s manners and conduct are vital elements of patient care, a tradition that has been passed down from ancient shamans to the rise of modern medicine. Since the 4th century BC, the Greeks were very specific about physician bedside manners. Hippocrates expressed that a physician must be “confidential, very chaste, sober, not a winebibber, and he ought to be fastidious in everything… he should approach the patient with moderate steps… gazing calmly at the sick bed… ” (Silverman, 2012).

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women in the U.S. It is the second most frequent cause of cancer death (41,000 deaths per year) 1. According to National Cancer institute, a woman’s lifetime risk of developing cancer is 1 in 8. In 2007, the latest year for which updated statistics are available, the U.S. incidence rate for female breast cancer was approximately 125 new cases diagnosed for every 100,000 women in the population and the mortality rate was approximately 23 deaths for every 100,000 women. The breast cancer death rate in the United States has been declining steadily since 1989-1990, when it peaked at a rate of 33 deaths for every 100,000 women. The fall in breast cancer deaths is mainly due to stopping of hormone replacement therapy in post-menopausal females.

When the famous Hollywood actress, Angelina Jolie, discovered that she carries a mutation of the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1, she had both of her breasts surgically removed to prevent the chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer. The BRCA mutation is not a death sentence, so bilateral mastectomy is unnecessary. Whenever public figures like Angelina Jolie perform an act like this, many people will look at them as their role model and will follow blindly into surgical procedure. When Angelina Jolie did this surgery, I was shocked and strongly felt it should not have been done. A new study is proving that she did make a wrong choice. The question becomes, do these defective BRCA genes affect breast cancer survival in reality? A study published in The Lancet Oncology found that young-onset breast cancer patients with inherited BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations have the same chances of survival as those without the mutations. Only 5% of breast cancer diagnoses are in females younger than age 40, and there is a high percentage of deaths in this age group. Many young female patients in this category carry BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations compared with those who get breast cancer at an older age (Capson, et al., 2018).

We are supposed to be walking barefoot on the mother earth. This is what animals and birds do. We all know that there is an electromagnetic field in the earth. When we are walking barefoot, we are touching the ground, and we are becoming electrically neutralized, as we do “earthing” of the electrical overcharge. Whenever we do any muscle contraction, the body becomes electrically charged, and we create more electrical static. This forms high potential. You might have seen that when you touch somebody, especially when you have a synthetic cloth on, there is a big spark. That electricity can be harmful for us. For example, people can get sore muscles from electricity.

You probably know that being overweight and obese can elevate the risk for type 2 diabetes. The types of specific foods you eat also affect your health. Did you know that eating meat increases your risk of becoming a type 2 diabetic? If you are a meat-lover, you need to see the latest research. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body’s ability to control blood glucose through insulin secretion weakens. This can be due to insulin resistance, which happens when insulin is unable to trigger glucose uptake by cells in the body. Sometimes in type 2 diabetes, the production of insulin in the pancreas declines. Recently, many studies have been published on an increased risk of type 2 (adult onset) diabetes related to meat.

Ayurveda, translating to “life knowledge,” provides wisdom for attaining and maintaining a balanced state of health. Its 5,000-year old wisdom relates health to the absence of disease. If we live a balanced lifestyle, we won’t be faced with disease and ill health. Ayurveda describes the concept of “Swasthyavrit,” translating to “Swasthya” or health, and “Vrit” or circle, to create the circle of health. Health is never static, as it is always impacted by our external and internal environments. We are always trying to maintain a healthy state of homeostasis for our body to function optimally. As such, we are starting a series of articles where we will discuss how to create the circle of health with Ayurvedic medicine, through the lens of latest research.

For almost half century, we have blamed dietary fats for creating heart disease. We then created statin drugs to block the production of fats. Meta-analysis of many studies shows that statins completely failed to deliver the results and rather created a slew of side effects which compensated quality of life.Atherosclerosis is the congestion and hardening of the arteries with particular types of fats. A recent study published in the Journal of Lipid Research in August 2017 issue explains that the lipids which clog the arteries, causing atherosclerosis, might not be derived from our food but instead bacteria in our mouth.

Ayurvedic medicine has become quite popular in the West. It is a matter of deep concern that many Ayurvedic supplements found in native India and around the world are contaminated with heavy metals.

Our immune system provides several layers of protection for the body. Physical structures like the skin, mucous lining of the mouth, nose, stomach, intestines and colon provide protection from the outside onslaught. The next layer of protection is provided by mast cells that conduct surveillance of these structures of the body. Mast cells  are one  of the earliest components of the immune system to come in contact with threats or allergens.

The immune system represents the capacity of an individual to defend their health against physical, emotional, and environmental challenges. The vitality of an individual is represented through various indicators of health. Although very complicated, digestion, elimination, and energy are some of the simple examples to represent the efficiency of metabolic functions of the body; helping to harvest energy and nutrition from food, as well as elimination of toxic burden, keeping the body nourished and clean. In science of immunology, the immune system is divided into 2 major components: Innate immunity and Humoral immunity.

The word ‘courage’ in the English language is derived from the latin word ‘cor’, which means heart. In our culture, we use phrases like “it takes heart” to describe the courageous quality of achieving something extraordinary. The heart is also considered central to our emotional experiences of love, generosity, compassion and sympathy. We all know the blessing of “living in someone’s heart”,the generosity of someone’s “kind heart”, the healing power of a “compassionate heart”,  the ease of living with an “open heart”. All of these expressions are for real, reach far beyond the activity of the physical heart, to an emotional and spiritual understanding of the heart. This is the mythical way our ancestors viewed the heart and its power on our lives.

The Vedic philosophy teaches us the idea of “Anna Brahma”, which means “Food as God”. This description is a symbolic statement made by the poetic ancestors of India. It symbolizes the importance of food to life – suggesting it is as essential as God is to life. For this reason, traditional Ayurvedic cooking methods were carefully developed to prepare the best quality and most non-toxic foods. When I see patients in the clinic, ninety-nine percent of them are cooking foods in a way that is toxic for them. If they are not cooking, they are eating processed foods that have a fair share of toxins as well. This pattern is not the fault of the individual; rather it is caused by misunderstanding and miseducation that persists culturally. Some examples are:

The Hippocratic Oath is taken by all medical students that graduate from Western medical schools as part of their initiation into the profession and as an affirmation of their responsibility to their patients. The original oath was penned by Greek physician, Hippocrates, in the 5th century BC. This ancient covenant is still used because it is the truth. In the modern scientific era, where the logic and practices of the past are questioned and easily dismissed as quack medicine, it is interesting that we depend on this oath to guide our modernized practice of medicine.

Dr. Caroline Roberston describes that “the frenetic pre-occupation with sex in western culture is often completely unrelated to sexual needs but more an expression of a thirst for intimacy.” Ayurvedic medicine teaches us that sexuality and intimacy are natural and essential part of the individual’s life. Ayurveda looks at the entirety of the individual’s life carefully and clearly outlines phases of life as follows.

A billion-dollar worth of statin drugs are sold annually as cholesterol-lowering medications. Statins work by inhibiting cholesterol-producing enzymes in the liver. Statin drugs like Lipitor, Zocor, and Crestor are prescribed like candy in the United States. According to a 2011 report, more than 32 million Americans were on statin medications. Research indicates that 50% of the men ages 65-74 and almost 40% of the women above age 75 are put on a statin drug. A conventional physician will tell you that statins will lower your cholesterol as well as decrease the risk of heart attack. But is that true?

December 15, 2012

Statin drugs have been considered as medications to lower cholesterol levels in the clinic. An enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase is responsible for the production of cholesterol in liver and statins inhibit the enzyme and thus reduce the production of cholesterol in the body. As a result, statin medications are presently one of the most prescribed drugs in the United States and in the world. According to Bloomberg, the 2010 sales of the two top selling statin drugs, Lipitor and Crestor, were $16 billion in the USA alone and worldwide sales of all statins drugs are in the upper range of $300 billion. Statin drugs like Lipitor, Mevacor, Pravacol, Zocor and others do interfere with the enzyme reductase to inhibit cholesterol production which is normally produced by liver, cholesterol is also derived from dietary sources.

Happy New Year! May this New Year bring health, wisdom and happiness! We have an appropriately great topic on sugar. Sugar is all around us, some of it is hidden and some of it is very obvious. In a society where we tend to put emphasis on doing what feels good, we often go without considering the implications. When it comes to sugar do not be fooled, it is very addictive and even a killer. Most of the sugars we consume today are highly concentrated; the only real sugar is Honey. All mass-produced sugars are not similar to what Mother Nature intended us to consume and we may not be genetically designed for it. Americans consume, on average, 160 pounds of sugar per year, making it about 17% of their daily caloric intake. This sugar is largely comprised of no nutritional value, and instead contains many harmful toxic compounds.

Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old ancient tradition of India and the world’s oldest health care system. Ayurvedic medicine focuses on natural and preventative means of addressing the root causes of diseases. It restores the balance of the body. In these olden Ayurvedic texts, vegadharan has been explained in by Swasthavritta. The word vega means natural urge and dharan refers to suppression. Vegadharan is suppression of natural urges. There are two types of natural urges: Dharniya, the one that is to be suppressed and adharniya, the one that is not to be suppressed.
