In Ayurvedic medicine, food is considered sacred. Food is one of the basic needs of human being, and it provides us the nutrients for the body’s growth, maintenance, repair and reproduction. Life cannot be sustained without adequate nutrition.

It is important that our digestive system functions optimally, and that our basic nutritional needs are met to avoid the disease process. In the twenty-first century we have progressed in our scientific knowledge tremendously, but our genes are still millions of years old and require the same ancient basic nutrition. Unfortunately, our basic food chain (air, water, food) has been badly corrupted. Our food has been altered from the food our ancestors ate; hence, the increase of cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, auto-immune diseases and many other chronic diseases.

The basic principle of Ayurveda is the prevention of the disease process through proper nutrition, exercise, yoga, herbs, detoxification and stress reduction. According to Ayurvedic medicine, everyone is unique and different. Ayurveda is based on the concept that five basic elements (ether (space), air, fire, water and earth) not only make up the world, but also our human form. A person can predominately be VAT (ether + air), or PIT (fire + water) or Kaph (water + earth), or a combination of two doshas or combination of all three doshas.

Nutritional requirements vary per person, depending upon body type, season, environment and place. At the Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Medical Clinic, we create an individualized nutritional plan depending upon your body type and disease process, along with yoga, breathing exercises, herbal or nutritional supplements and prescription drugs for achieving optimal health
