The colon is home for over 90 trillion bacteria – it is the largest colony of bacteria in the body. These are 9 times more than human cells. This colony of bacteria is formed by many different species of bacteria that support health digestion, breakdown and absorption of certain vitamins and minerals, as well as support the immune system. Intestinal bacteria intimately related to our mood, food cravings, and even hormonal balance. Imbalance of the species of the intestinal flora or invasion of pathogenic species can cause severe disease.
At the Ayurvedic & Naturopathic Medical Clinic, colonic therapy has very different meaning from most other places in the West. Colonic represents a modern version of a traditional Ayurvedic therapy called, Basti.
Ayurvedic Basti is part of the cleansing program Panchkarma. There are two major aspects of the treatment: Cleansing and Restoration. The cleansing of the colon is done with a moderate stream of water that loosens the morbid matter trapped in the colon – helping to release it. The restoration of is done through implantation of supportive herbs and probiotic culture directly into the rectum.
Therapeutic colonic is a western version of the colonic treatment. This only involves the cleansing aspect of Ayurvedic basti. Cleansing is beneficial for elimination of toxins, reducing burden on the liver and gallbladder.
Indications for Colonic include:
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Small intestinal bacterial over-growth (SIBO)
- Kidney disease
- Liver and gallbladder congestion
- Recurrent exposure to antibiotics
- And other gastrointestinal diseases.
